WHAT IS THE “LABOR OF LOVE ” THEATER PROGRAM?

The “Labor Of Love” program is BAC’s low cost community theater program offering a chance for teens, adults and kids to perform on stage together! This program is open to everyone in the community (you do NOT need to be a BAC student to participate) In order to offer this program at a reduced rate, it will require all cast members / families to  provide some “sweat equity” by obtaining program ads, donating materials / costumes/ props, promoting ticket sales, and volunteering to build sets, sew costumes, wrangle kids, work crew, usher or collect tickets. Hence came the name “LABOR OF LOVE” We will all need to work together!

    .

WHAT DOES IT COST TO PARTICIPATE?

BAC is reducing its production fees to a modest $50-75 per cast member (regularly $175-250).  Fees are only collected if you are cast in the show (it cost nothing to audition) This fee will be put towards the general expenses involved in putting on a show (Rent, utilities, theater rental, insurance, sound equipment, sets, prop pieces, scripts, programs, performance rights / royalties and wages for staff & stage technicians) The production fee does NOT cover your costume or tickets. Cast members will be contacted with a list of costume items they will need to purchase. Additionally each cast member will need to obtain 3 Ads (business or personal) for our digital program. Production fees are non-refundable & non-transferable.

    .

    WHAT IS THE TIME COMMITMENT?

Depending on your part, you will NOT be needed every day (nor the entire rehearsal time). We will be rehearsing in groups on  Mon, Tues, Wed & Thur between 4:00-9:00pm for the entire month of June. As much as possible – Younger children will be scheduled during the early hours and teens/adults in the later hours.  Because we only have 4 weeks to get everything ready, it is imperative you attend every rehearsal time you are scheduled for. We *may* be able to work around minor conflicts, but to be eligible for main parts or bigger speaking roles you need to be widely available the month of June.  On the audition sheet (You will need to print and bring completed form to the audition), please list any and all obligations you have in June that would conflict with the rehearsal days/times (work, vacations, camps, sports etc)  . You will need to bring this to the audition. After auditions, we will compile a rehearsal schedule and email it to the cast. Once the schedule is made, we expect cast members to adhere to their times and make rehearsals their number one priority in June.

    .

    HOW DO I PARTICIPATE?

Unlike other BAC programs where you automatically get a part when you sign up – our Labor of a Love program will require an AUDITION  to participate (scroll down for audition details) . The show has a few big speaking parts, many small-medium size speaking parts plus a dynamic ensemble (extra singers, dancers & non-speaking actors) There are many opportunities for performers of all ages, however, depending on how many people audition we may not be able to cast everyone in the show, and not everyone who is cast in the show will have a speaking part.

In order to attend the audition You need to REGISTER ONLINE for the audition scheduled for your age group.  Once registered you will be emailed a confirmation with more information. Those age 9-up will be sent a monologue and song to prepare for the audition.

    .

      • * Patience – expect to wait your turn
      • .
    • 4. WHAT TO EXPECT  / HOW TO PREPARE
      • * AGE 6-8 This age group does not need to prepare anything ahead of time.  Girls will be taught a short, fun ballet combination and boys & girls will participate in some drama exercises . Our goal for this age is to make the audition  fun and educational  (regardless of the results) our hope is they walk away with a positive experience.  We are looking for confident children who learn quickly,  have excellent behavior, focus and attention and can demonstrate self control (refrain from disrupting or distracting behaviors)
      • .
      • * AGE 9-ADULT: Once you register online, You will be emailed a monologue to memorize and recite at the audition and a verse of a song to sing.  Everyone will recite the same passage and sing the same song. We encourage those who would like to recite and/or sing as a particular character from the show  to do so (see the character list below) Or simply recite / sing as yourself! Unless the directors instruct you otherwise  – You will have only ONE chance to read and sing at the audition – so think carefully about the best way to showcase your individual personality and talents. We do NOT recommend doing a character unless you have rehearsed it at home ahead of time NOR one that you are not eligible (age or otherwise) to play. See the list of characters below for age and requirements.   We are looking for confidence, expressive faces and voices (speaking & singing) as well as a strong stage presence. Most actors will NOT have mics – so projection (speaking loud and clear) is key in being considered for a speaking role.  We are also looking for people with a positive attitude, attentive and focused  learners and those who refrain from distracting/disruptive behavior. Those with dance experience who would like to be considered for bigger dance parts will have an option to participate in the dance audition. (Bring Jazz & Tap shoes if you have them)
      • .
    • 5. GETTING A “CALL BACK” – Sometimes directors need to take a second look at you! Please be available in the afternoon in case we call you back in.  Do not stress out if you are NOT called back –  it does not necessarily mean you were not cast – in many cases it just means the directors already know what part they want you for.
    • .
    • 6. AUDITION RESULTS: Once the cast list is complete – the production fee will be charged to those who were cast. (You must have a valid credit card on file)  IF you are cast in multiple parts you will only be charged ONE fee ($75) . After all fees are collected the cast list will be posted on our website and emailed. If you are cast in the show, you are expected to participate in whatever role you are given (big or small) with enthusiasm and to the best of your ability. If your child is not cast, please do not give up! BAC offers many classes and workshops thru out the year (that do NOT require an audition) that your child can be a part of!

    .

    • 7. HANDLING  EXPECTATIONS: Auditions can be stressful and emotionally difficult for all involved (including the directors!!) but especially for children. We do our very best to make auditioning  a positive and fun experience but unfortunately disappointments are inevitable. After all, there are only so many parts to give out – and lets face it we can’t ALL be Tinkerbelle! Handling audition results with grace is often the most difficult part of being involved in theater – but we must learn to overcome disappointments in order to grow and participate in the arts. Having realistic expectations and knowing a bit about the process can help ease high emotions. Please take moment to read THIS LETTER  with your child about what to expect and how to handle audition results.
